Players use it to hit a ball thrown by a pitcher. Most bats are made of wood. Some are made of metal.

Every bat has special parts. The thick part is the barrel. This is where you hit the ball. The best spot to hit is the "sweet spot." The thin part is the handle. A knob at the bottom keeps the bat from slipping. Some handles have a rubber grip to help you hold it.

People have tried many shapes over the years. Some bats have an axe-shaped handle. Others look like a torpedo. A torpedo bat is wider at the bottom. It looks a bit like a bowling pin.

Many woods are used to make bats. Ash was very common. Now, many players use maple. Maple is a popular choice. Some bats are even made of bamboo. Bamboo is strong and light.

Rules keep the game safe. In the major leagues, a bat must be one piece of solid wood. It cannot be hollow. Metal bats are often used in amateur games. They can hit the ball very fast. This is why some leagues use wood bats instead.
