Workers use red thread to sew the cover. There are 108 stitches on a regulation ball. These stitches are very important. They help the ball move through the air. A pitcher can change how the ball flies by how they spin it. This helps them throw pitches like a curveball or a fastball.

In the old days, baseballs were different. Some were small and dark. They were called "lemon peel" balls. These balls bounced high and traveled far. Today, the balls are more the same. Most major league balls are made by a company called Rawlings. They use a special way to make them. They use yarn from Australia and a cork center. This makes the ball stay the same for every game. Each ball weighs about 5 to 5.25 ounces. They are also about 9 inches around.
