A baseball bat is a smooth club used to hit a ball.

Players use these tools to drive the ball far across the field. Most professional bats are made of solid wood. Some amateur players use metal alloy bats, like aluminum. Metal bats can hit the ball much faster and farther. Because they are so fast, many leagues use wooden bats to keep players safe.

Every bat has specific parts that help a player hit well. The thick part is called the barrel. The best place to hit the ball is the "sweet spot" on that barrel. Below the barrel, the bat narrows into a thin handle. This allows the batter to grip the bat comfortably. At the very bottom, a knob prevents the bat from slipping out of the hands. Some players even wrap the handle in a rubber grip.

Inventors have tried many new shapes to change how the game is played. In 1890, Emile Kinst made a curved "banana bat" to make the ball spin. In 1906, the Spalding company made a "mushroom bat" with a large knob. Later, the "Axe Bat" was created with a handle shaped like an axe. In 2025, the New York Yankees used a "torpedo bat" design. This bat looks like a bowling pin because it is widest lower down.

Materials matter a lot when making a good bat. Many bats are made from ash wood. Other players use maple, hickory, or even bamboo. Maple became very popular after Joe Carter used it in 1997. However, maple bats can sometimes shatter into sharp pieces. Manufacturers now use special tests to make sure the wood grain is safe. They often put the label on the side of the bat that is less likely to break.

Famous players have left their mark on how bats are made. Babe Ruth used very large ash bats early in his career. In 1920, he used a 40-inch bat that weighed 54 ounces. As he played more, he made his bats lighter each season. Honus Wagner was the first player to sign his name on a bat. Today, many players still use templates based on famous legends. Even the way a bat is colored can be a personal choice for the player.
