A baseball glove is a vital tool for players on the defending team.

It helps them catch fast balls hit by a batter. It also helps them field balls thrown by a teammate. Most gloves are made from heavy leather. Some modern versions use synthetic leather or even PVC. Players wear the glove on their non-throwing hand. A right-handed thrower wears the glove on their left hand. This is called a right-handed glove.

Making a great catch often depends on the glove's design.

Many gloves have a web between the thumb and index finger. This web creates a pocket to trap the ball. Different players need different types of gloves to do their jobs. Catchers use a large mitt that looks like a mitten. These mitts lack individual fingers and have extra padding. Infielders use smaller gloves with shallow pockets. This allows them to remove the ball quickly to make a fast throw.

Early baseball was played without any gloves at all.

A player who caught without one was called a barehanded catcher. One of the first players to use a glove was Doug Allison in 1870. He used one because his left hand was injured. In 1875, Charlie Waitt wore flesh-colored gloves while playing. Early gloves were often simple leather with the fingertips cut off. They were mostly used for extra padding rather than catching. By the mid-1890s, wearing a glove became normal for many players.

Design changes helped players make fewer errors on the field.

In the early 1900s, makers began adding a leather web. This turned the glove from protective gear into a specialized tool. A pitcher named Bill Doak later suggested a web to create a pocket. He patented this design and sold it to the company Rawlings. This design became the standard for the modern gloves we see today. Some companies like Easton even experiment with Kevlar in new gloves. Kevlar is a strong material used in bullet-proof vests.

Gloves come in many specific sizes and shapes for different tasks.

Youth gloves are often small, while adult outfield gloves are much larger. First basemen use wide mitts to scoop up balls from the ground. Pitchers often use gloves with closed webbing to hide their grip. This keeps the batter from seeing how they hold the ball. Outfielders use long gloves with deep pockets for fly balls. Some special gloves even have a second thumb pocket for switch-players. This allows the glove to be worn on either hand.
