Medical glove

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Medical gloves are very important tools used by doctors and nurses. They help prevent cross-contamination between caregivers and their patients. This means they stop germs from moving from one person to another.

These gloves also protect workers from contact with blood or body fluids. They can also offer basic protection against harmful chemicals. However, they are not perfect for every job. They can be easily pierced by solvents or many hazardous chemicals. You should never use them for tasks like dishwashing.

There are two main ways these gloves are used. The first type is called examination gloves. These are used for regular checkups and can be sterile or non-sterile. The second type is called surgical gloves. These are usually sterile and made to a much higher standard. They have very precise sizing so they fit perfectly. This helps surgeons have better sensitivity and dexterity.

Dexterity means being able to move your hands with great skill. This is very important during a long operation.

We can look back to see how these gloves began. In 1889, Caroline Hampton was a chief nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She had a bad skin reaction to a chemical used for cleaning. To help her, William Halsted asked the Goodyear Rubber Company to make thin rubber gloves. He began using sterilized gloves at the hospital in 1894. Much later, the Ansell Rubber Co. Pty. Ltd. invented the first modern disposable glove in 1965. They used a technique from making condoms to create them.

Many different materials are used to make these gloves. They are made of polymers, which are types of plastics or rubbers. Common materials include latex, nitrile rubber, neoprene, and polyvinyl chloride.

Nitrile is often used because it is strong and resists tearing. Some gloves used to have corn starch inside to help hands slide in. This powder helped them be easier to put on. However, powder can sometimes cause skin issues or slow down healing. Because of this, the United States banned powdered medical gloves in 2017.

Sometimes, doctors use a method called double gloving. This means they wear two layers of gloves at once. This is a smart way to reduce the danger of infection. If a sharp tool pokes through the first glove, the second one helps.

Studies show that double gloving can reduce the number of holes in inner gloves by 71 percent. This extra layer keeps the surgeon and the patient much safer. It is a simple way to add more protection during a hard job.
