How did people play this game? In the very beginning, players used only their bare hands to hit the ball. They did not have any tools at all. Later, players began to wear gloves to protect their hands. Eventually, they started using wooden paddle-bats called battoirs. Finally, they began using racquets like we see in sports today.

Even when these tools became common, the name of the game never changed. There are even two different ways to play it now. One is called longue paume, which is played outdoors on a long field. The other is courte paume, which is played indoors.

The history of this game goes back a very long time. It started in France and grew into many different sports. Some people call the modern version "real tennis" to tell it apart from lawn tennis. In the 17th century, the buildings used for the game were sometimes used as theatres.
