In 1979, a cricket player did something very unusual.

Dennis Lillee played a big game in Perth, Australia. Most players use bats made of wood. But Lillee used a bat made of aluminium. This metal bat was called the ComBat. A friend made it to be a cheap tool. It was meant for schools and new countries.

Lillee used the metal bat to help sell them. At that time, there were no rules against it. But the game became very tense. The English captain, Mike Brearley, had a worry. He said the metal bat could hurt the leather ball. The umpires told Lillee to change his bat. Lillee did not want to switch.

Leaders talked for almost ten minutes. Finally, the Australian captain gave Lillee a wooden bat. Lillee was upset. He threw the metal bat far away. The rules changed soon after this. Now, Law 5 says a bat must be wood. Lillee still keeps his metal bat. Both teams signed it after the match.
