Hélio learned judo when he was 16 years old. He practiced with his brothers, Carlos and George. He also learned catch wrestling from a teacher named Orlando Americo "Dudú" da Silva. Hélio found that some judo moves were hard for him to do. He began to change the moves to make them work better. He used ground fighting, which is called newaza, to adapt the style. These experiments helped create Gracie jiu-jitsu. This new way of fighting became a very important skill.

Hélio's professional fighting career began when he was 18. In 1932, he won his first match against a boxer named Antonio Portugal. He won by using an armlock in about 40 seconds. Later that year, he fought a wrestler named Fred Ebert. Ebert was much heavier than Hélio by 29 kg. That match lasted almost two hours before it was stopped. In 1934, Hélio fought a man named Miyaki. Hélio won that match by using a gi choke. A gi choke is a move that uses the heavy cloth jacket.

Hélio faced many different types of fighters throughout his life. He fought a wrestler named Wladek Zbyszko in 1935. Zbyszko was 40 kg heavier than Hélio. The match ended in a draw, but people praised Hélio's courage. He also fought a judo expert named Yasuichi Ono. In one match, Ono threw Hélio 32 times. Hélio still did not give up and the match ended in a draw. He even fought a sumo wrestler and a judo black belt named Massagoishi. Hélio won that fight using an armlock.

In 1951, Hélio faced a famous fighter named Masahiko Kimura. Kimura was a professional wrestler and a judoka. They fought on October 22, 1951. Kimura won the match using a move called gyaku-ude-garami. Today, people call that specific move the Kimura lock. This match is a very famous part of martial arts history. Hélio Gracie passed away on January 29, 2009. He remains a hero in Brazilian history for his skill and bravery.
