He is known for being a master of mixed martial arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In the UFC, he became a champion in two different weight classes. This is a very rare and hard thing to do. He was even the first person from outside of Brazil to win a world title in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Because of his great skill, he was put into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2015. Many people consider him one of the best fighters to ever compete in the sport.

Penn learned his skills through many different steps. He started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when he was only 17 years old. His neighbor, Tom Callos, first showed him how to train. Later, Penn moved to San Jose, California, to study at the Ralph Gracie academy. He worked his way up through the colored belts. He earned a purple belt, then a brown belt, and finally a black belt in 2000.

In 2004, he had a huge upset victory against Matt Hughes. He used a move called a rear naked choke to win the Welterweight Championship. Later, he won the Lightweight Championship by defeating Joe Stevenson. He won that fight using a choke in the second round. After winning the belt, he defended his title three times. He became the second person ever to hold titles in two different weight classes.

Even though he was a great athlete, Penn's life has had many different chapters. He tried to enter politics by running for governor of Hawaii in 2022. He did not win the Republican Party primary. In 2025, he faced some very difficult personal and health struggles. He made claims about his family that led to a restraining order from his mother. He also faced legal trouble and was arrested several times. His life shows both the high points of great success and the hard times that can come later.
