The cage was designed by Jason Cusson. He wanted a way to make the fights look different from boxing. The fighters must follow the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. These rules help keep the sport fair and safe. They include things like using gloves and having weight classes. Judges also help decide who wins if a fight is a draw.

Businessman Art Davie and martial artist Rorion Gracie helped start it. They worked with film director John Milius. They also had help from leaders at Semaphore Entertainment Group. The very first event happened on November 12, 1993. It was held at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. At first, the goal was to find the best martial art. People wanted to see if different styles could beat each other.

In the early days, the rules were very simple. There were no weight classes for the fighters. This meant a small fighter might face a much larger opponent. One famous fighter was Royce Gracie. He used Brazilian jiu-jitsu to win the first tournament. He defeated fighters like Ken Shamrock and Gerard Gordeau.

Later, the rules changed to make the sport more professional. The UFC added time limits and referees. They also banned certain moves like fish-hooking. These changes helped the UFC grow into a global business.

Today, the UFC is a very large and successful enterprise. Dana White has been the president since 2001. He became the CEO in 2023. The company has expanded to Australia, Asia, and Europe. It has held over 750 events around the world. In 2023, the UFC merged with the WWE. This created the new company called TKO Group Holdings.
