It is not a real sporting contest between two opponents. Instead, it is a form of entertainment-based theater. The performers use scripted stories to drive their matches. These matches are also partially choreographed. This means the moves are planned out beforehand. Performers use moves that can put them at risk of injury.

Because of this, the company calls its work "sports entertainment." This name honors both sports and dramatic theater.

To make a show, performers follow a specific plan. They act out roles in a ring to tell a story. The matches use moves that look very tough. Even though they are scripted, the physical work is real. The company uses its ideas to make other things too. They license their characters for video games and action figures. They have also branched into film and football. This makes them a global media and entertainment company.

The main roster is split into two brands named Raw and SmackDown. They also have a developmental brand called NXT. These performers train at a center in Orlando, Florida.
