The Evolution Championship Series, often called Evo, is a massive yearly event for esports. It focuses only on fighting games. This tournament is special because it is completely open to everyone. Players use a double elimination format to compete. People travel from all over the world to attend. They come from gaming hubs like Japan, South Korea, and Pakistan.

Competing at Evo involves many different ways to play. Most players join the official tournament matches. However, many people visit the "BYOC" area. This stands for "bring your own console." In this space, players use their own machines to play various games. They can also enter smaller side tournaments here. This allows everyone to enjoy gaming together outside the main stage.

Evo has a long and interesting history. It was founded by Tom Cannon. It started in 1996 as an event called Battle by the Bay. That first tournament was held in Sunnyvale, California. It only had 40 players competing on arcade cabinets. The event changed its name to Evo in 2002. Since 2005, it has often been held in the Las Vegas Valley.

Many important milestones happened during these years. In 2004, the tournament moved from arcade cabinets to home consoles. This change caused a lot of controversy among players. That same year, a famous play called "Evo Moment #37" occurred. During a Street Fighter III match, Daigo Umehara performed a difficult parry against Justin Wong. In 2009, the tournament grew very large. The new game Street Fighter IV helped attendance grow by a huge amount.

Evo connects many different parts of gaming culture. It brings together professional players and casual fans. In 2011, over 2 million people watched the event on a live stream. Fans also enjoy dressing up as characters, which is called cosplay. The event even uses community votes to pick games. For example, players once voted to include Super Smash Bros. Melee. All the money raised from that vote went to breast cancer research.
