The Evolution Championship Series, commonly known as Evo, is a premier annual esports event. It focuses exclusively on the genre of fighting games. The tournament is unique because it is completely open to all participants. It utilizes a double elimination format for its competitive structure. This means a player must lose twice to be removed from the competition. People travel from across the globe to participate in these matches. Major gaming hubs like Japan, South Korea, and Pakistan are represented.

Competitive play at Evo happens in several distinct ways. The main focus is on the official tournament matches held on large stages. However, the event also features a "BYOC" area. This stands for "bring your own console." In this space, attendees use their own gaming machines to play. This area hosts many different games and various side tournaments. It allows the community to engage with gaming in a more casual setting.

Evo has a long history of growth and transformation. It was founded by Tom Cannon, who is also known for his work on Shoryuken.com. The event began in 1996 as "Battle by the Bay" in Sunnyvale, California. That original tournament featured only 40 contenders. These players competed on arcade cabinets using Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2. The event officially changed its name to Evo in 2002. Since 2005, the tournament has been held at various venues across the Las Vegas Valley.

Technical changes have significantly shaped the tournament's evolution. Originally, players competed using traditional arcade cabinets. In 2004, organizers made the controversial decision to move all games to home consoles. During the transition to seventh-generation consoles, most games were played on the PlayStation 3. However, Evo 2014 used the Xbox 360 for most of its games. These shifts in hardware changed how the community interacted with the competitive scene.

One of the most famous moments in esports history occurred during Evo 2004. This event is known as "Evo Moment #37." During a Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike match, Daigo Umehara played as the character Ken. He faced Justin Wong, who was playing as Chun-Li. With very little health remaining, Umehara successfully parried a "Super Move" from Chun-Li. He then immediately countered with his own move to win the match. This high-skill play became highly influential within the global fighting game community.

Evo has seen massive increases in participation and viewership over the years. In 2009, the tournament recorded over one thousand participants. The release of Street Fighter IV helped attendance grow by a considerable margin. By 2010, the Super Street Fighter IV tournament alone had approximately 1,800 players. The event also reached a massive digital audience. In 2011, the livestream was watched by over 2 million unique viewers on UStream.

Beyond competition, Evo is a central hub for gaming culture and charity. Fans often participate in cosplay, which involves dressing up as game characters.

The community also helps decide the tournament roster through voting. In 2013, players voted on the final game via online donations. This vote chose Super Smash Bros. Melee as the eighth game. The process raised $94,683 for that specific game. More importantly, the total donations reached $225,744 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This shows how the tournament connects competitive skill with broader social causes.
