Many people think it is one of the greatest video games ever made. It helped make the fighting game genre very popular during the 1990s. It even helped keep arcade businesses running during a time when they were struggling.

Players enter a tournament to fight one-on-one in close combat. You use an eight-directional joystick to move, jump, or block. There are also six attack buttons for fighting. These include three punch buttons and three kick buttons. You can choose light, medium, or heavy attacks. Each button press changes the speed and strength of your move. Players can also perform special moves using specific button commands. One famous feature is the combo system. This lets players link attacks together so they cannot be blocked. Designers actually found this feature by accident during development.

In the game, you must win rounds to become the champion. To win a round, you must drain your opponent's health bar. You can also win if you have more health when the timer ends. The first person to win two rounds is the victor. In single-player mode, you can fight against the computer. After every third match, you get a bonus stage. In this stage, you can earn points by smashing cars, barrels, or oil drums. You move around a world map to pick your next fight location.

The story follows a tournament held by a group called Shadaloo. The leader, M. Bison, wants to rule the world. He uses a temple in Thailand as his base. He organizes the Second World Fighting Tournament to lure out a fighter named Ryu. Ryu is a Japanese martial artist who wants to perfect his skills. He wins the tournament and becomes the champion. Other famous fighters include Ken from the United States and Chun-Li from China. There are eight playable fighters in the original version. You also face powerful bosses like Sagat and M. Bison.

Street Fighter II was a massive success all over the world. By 1994, about 25 million people had played it in the United States. More than 200,000 arcade cabinets were sold globally. The game also sold 15 million software units. On the SNES console, over 6.3 million copies were sold. This made it Capcom's best-selling game for 20 years. The game changed how people compete in arcades. Instead of just chasing high scores, players began competing head-to-head. This led to big tournament events like the Evolution Championship Series, or EVO.
