He helped create Gracie jiu-jitsu. This is also called Brazilian jiu-jitsu or BJJ. He worked with his brothers to build this system. It uses special moves to help people defend themselves. These moves help smaller or weaker people win against much larger opponents.

Hélio learned judo when he was 16 years old. He found that some moves were hard for him to do. Because of this, he began to change them. He used ground fighting to make the art work better.

He was a very brave fighter. He took on many big challenges. Once, he fought a wrestler who was much heavier than him. The match lasted almost two hours. In another fight, he used a gi choke. A gi choke is a move using the heavy cloth jacket. He also used an armlock to win matches. One famous fighter named Masahiko Kimura defeated Hélio in 1951. Kimura used a move called a gyaku-ude-garami. Today, people call that move the Kimura lock. Hélio is remembered as a hero in Brazil.
