Montessori education is a special way of learning. It focuses on the natural interests of children. Instead of a teacher giving a long lecture, students learn by doing.

This method uses hands-on activities to build real skills. Children learn how to solve problems on their own. They also learn how to help and teach their classmates. This style of school views children as eager to learn. It believes they can lead their own learning in the right space.

How does a Montessori classroom actually work? It uses something called a "prepared environment." This means the room is made just for the children. Everything is sized for them to reach easily.

Most classrooms use mixed-age groups. For example, children aged 3 to 6 might work together. Students get to choose their own activities from a list. They also have long blocks of work time. These blocks can last at least three hours. This helps them focus deeply on a task. They do not use grades or stickers to stay motivated.

The story of this method began with Maria Montessori. She was a doctor from Italy in the 19th century. She was one of the first female doctors in her country.

She studied how children learn through scientific experiments. In 1907, she opened her first school in Rome. It was called the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House. She worked with underprivileged children in a district called San Lorenzo. In 1909, she wrote down her ideas in a book. This book was later translated into English in 1912.

Montessori ideas spread to many different places. The first Montessori school in the U.S. opened in 1913. It was the Scarborough School in New York.

Later, the method traveled to places like India. In 1931, the leader Mahatma Gandhi met Maria Montessori in London. He thought her methods could help build a new nation. Today, there are thousands of these schools in the United States. They exist in many forms, including public and private schools. Some serve families with less money through government funding.

You might recognize some of these ideas in other places. Many schools use special tools to help kids learn. For instance, students use sandpaper letters to learn writing. They trace the rough shapes with their fingers. They also use bead chains to understand math. A single bead might represent one unit. A bar of ten beads represents 1 times 10. These tools turn hard ideas into things you can touch. This helps children build a strong base for later learning.
