Maria was a very bright student. She studied many subjects like math and science. She even wanted to be an engineer. At that time, most people thought women should only be teachers. Maria chose a much harder path.

Maria decided to study medicine at the University of Rome. This was a very unusual choice for a woman in the 1890s. She faced many hard times during her studies. Some students and teachers were not kind to her. Because of her gender, she had to study alone after hours. She even had to do her medical dissections by herself. Despite these struggles, Maria worked very hard. She graduated as a doctor of medicine in 1896.

After becoming a doctor, Maria began to study how children learn. She spent time in asylums to observe children with learning difficulties. She read the work of doctors like Jean Marc Gaspard Itard. These doctors helped her create a new way of teaching. In 1900, she helped lead the Orthophrenic School. This school trained teachers to help children with disabilities.

This school was in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. It was built for children from low-income families. The first class had about 50 or 60 children. They were between two and seven years old. In this school, children did many practical tasks. They learned to dust, sweep, and care for a garden. They also practiced dressing and undressing themselves. This helped them become more independent.

Maria's ideas grew and spread all over the world. Her way of teaching is known as the Montessori method. Today, many public and private schools use her ideas. People can even see her face on a stamp in India.
