It is one of two main styles in the Olympic Games. In this sport, wrestlers use their arms and legs to move. They can use their legs for defense or to attack. This makes it different from Greco-Roman wrestling. The main goal is to throw an opponent to the mat. A wrestler wins immediately if they achieve a pin. A pin happens when a wrestler holds their opponent's shoulder to the ground.

Matches happen on a special thick rubber mat. This mat is shock-absorbing to keep the athletes safe.

The main wrestling area has a nine-meter diameter. It has a red zone around the edge. This zone helps officials see if a wrestler is being passive. Inside the red zone is a central area seven meters wide. The corners of the mat show the wrestlers' colors. These are often red and blue or red and green.

This sport has a very long history. It grew from a style called catch-as-catch-can. This style was popular at fairs and festivals during the 1800s. Many U.S. presidents even practiced catch-as-catch-can wrestling. These leaders included George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Freestyle first became an Olympic sport in 1904.

Today, a group called United World Wrestling sets the rules. They are based near Lausanne, Switzerland. They manage rules for the World Games and the Olympics. To keep things fair, wrestlers compete in different weight classes. For men, there are six age categories like schoolboys and seniors. Women also compete in four categories including schoolgirls and seniors.
