Arm wrestling

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Arm wrestling is a strength sport that tests physical dominance. Two people face each other over a flat surface. They place their bent elbows on a table and grip hands firmly. The goal is to "pin" the opponent. A pin happens when a player forces the other hand down to the surface.

This contest often symbolizes toughness and personal resolve. It is a way for people to show their strength through skill.

Professional matches use specialized equipment to keep things fair. The tables have elbow pads to mark where arms must stay. They also have pin pads to show the winning height. Players use hand pegs to grip with their non-wrestling hand. This provides extra leverage during the pull.

If hands slip, a nylon strap can bind the wrists together. This prevents mistakes during a match. A referee watches closely to ensure everyone follows the rules.

History shows that people have practiced this for a long time. In Japan, it was known as wrist wrestling. Art from the 1700s shows people playing it. The Kojiki, an old Japanese text, records it in the eighth century.

In the 1800s, players in Spain and Cuba used money. They would place a coin under each elbow. In the United States, it was sometimes called "Indian arm wrestling." Some sources link it to Native American peoples like the Lenape.

Modern organized competition grew quickly after the 1950s. In 1954, a challenge in Petaluma, California, started local interest. This led to a big fundraising event in 1955. By 1962, the World's Wristwrestling Championship, Inc. was created.

The 1970s and 1980s were a "golden age" for the sport. The 1987 film "Over the Top" helped make it famous worldwide. Today, groups like the World Armwrestling Federation help manage the sport.

There are three main techniques used to win. The "hook" uses wrist pressure and bicep strength. The "toproll" is an outside style that uses back pressure. It aims to open the opponent's wrist to gain control.

The "press" uses the shoulder and chest to push the arm down. Today, millions watch athletes like Devon Larratt on social media. Some people even hope to see arm wrestling in the Olympic Games.
