Lucha libre is a special style of professional wrestling from Mexico.

It is much more than just a sport to the people who love it. In 2018, Mexico City named lucha libre an intangible cultural heritage. This means it is a precious tradition passed down through generations. The wrestlers, known as luchadores, are famous for being very fast and agile.

Unlike some other styles that focus on heavy power, lucha libre celebrates movement. Many luchadores belong to big wrestling families that work together in groups. These families often pass their skills down to their children.

Watching a match is an exciting experience filled with high-flying action.

Luchadores often use the ropes of the ring to catapult themselves through the air. They perform rapid sequences of moves and complex holds called llaves. Because the rings often lack springy supports, wrestlers frequently perform their big jumps onto opponents outside the ring. This helps them break their fall with a smooth, acrobatic tumble. Many wrestlers start training when they are in their mid-teens. This allows them to become experts by the time they are in their twenties.

One of the most important parts of lucha libre is the mask, or máscara.

These masks are brightly colored and very detailed. They often look like animals, gods, or ancient heroes. A mask is so important that it is considered sacred to the luchador. In fact, trying to pull off an opponent's mask during a match can get a wrestler disqualified. For some, the mask is their entire identity. The famous wrestler El Santo even wore his silver mask even after he retired. He was eventually buried while wearing it.

History shows how these traditions grew over many years.

Masks first appeared in Mexico around the 1920s. They were inspired by the way covered roosters look in cockfighting. By the 1930s, masked wrestlers became very popular across the country. A famous type of match is the lucha de apuesta, which is a wager match. In these fights, wrestlers bet something very valuable like their mask or their hair.

One of the first big wager matches happened on July 14, 1940, at Arena México. In that match, a wrestler named El Murciélago Enmascarado had to lose his mask.

Lucha libre has also spread its influence far beyond the borders of Mexico.

Many famous wrestlers from Japan started their careers by training in Mexico. Names like Último Dragón and Jushin Thunder Liger are known around the world. Even in the United States, people have adopted some of these high-flying moves. Today, you can see the influence of lucha libre in many places. It is even used as inspiration for art and paintings. The colorful masks and amazing moves make it a truly unique part of world culture.
