The International Boxing Association, or IBA, is a major group for boxing. It manages matches for both amateur and professional boxers. The group also hosts the World Boxing Championships every two years.

It is made up of five big groups from different parts of the world. These are the African, American, Asian, European, and Oceania boxing groups. In 2021, the IBA included 198 national groups. This large network helps organize the sport across the whole globe.

Running a sports group involves many important steps. The IBA must manage money and set the rules for matches. They also oversee how judges and referees score the fights. For a long time, the group used a system called AIBA. In 2013, they even changed the rules about headgear. They decided senior men would no longer wear headguards during matches. They believed this change would actually help prevent head injuries.

This organization has a very long history. It first began after the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. At that time, leaders from five different countries met to start a group called FIBA.

In 1946, the group changed its name to AIBA. This happened to help the group regain trust after World War II. Over many years, the name eventually became the International Boxing Association.

Many leaders have run the IBA since it began. Anwar Chowdhry was a president for a very long time starting in 1986. Later, Wu Ching-kuo became president in 2006. His time in charge was difficult because of unpaid debts. He left in 2017 and received a lifetime ban in 2018. After him, Umar Kremlev was elected as president in 2020. He promised to fix the money problems and work with the Olympics again.

Today, the IBA is part of a big change in sports. The International Olympic Committee, or IOC, had many concerns about the IBA. They worried about how the group handled money and rules. In 2023, the IOC officially removed the IBA from the Olympic movement. This was the first time this had ever happened to a group. Now, a new group called World Boxing is stepping in. The IOC gave this new group its support in February 2025.
