A relay race is a special kind of competition for teams.

Instead of one person racing alone, team members take turns. They each finish one part of a racecourse. Then, they pass a baton to the next person. A baton is a small, stick-like object.

Relay races can be professional or just for fun. You can find them in running, swimming, and even ice skating. They bring people together to work as one unit. This teamwork makes the racing very exciting to watch.

In track races, the way the baton is passed is very important.

Runners must pass the baton inside a marked exchange zone. In fast sprint relays, runners often use a "blind handoff." The second runner does not look back at the first runner. Instead, they start running at a specific mark. The first runner might shout "Stick!" to help.

This helps the second runner know exactly when to reach out. In longer races, runners might jog and look back instead.

Swimming relays also use clever strategies to win.

Teams often pick an order for their swimmers. A common way is to have the second-fastest, then third-fastest, then the slowest. The fastest swimmer is called the "anchor" and goes last. In a medley relay, every swimmer uses a different stroke. They must go in order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. Swimmers often race faster in a team than they do alone. This is because the team spirit helps them swim better.

There are many different types of relay races around the world.

In the Olympics, the 4 × 100 metre and 4 × 400 metre races are standard. Some relays are much longer, like the Prince Takamatsu Cup in Japan. That race starts in Nagasaki and goes for a very long distance. There are even relays for skiing and biathlon. In biathlon, athletes must also stop to shoot targets. These different versions show how many ways people can compete together.

Relay racing is a huge part of sports culture.

The Penn Relays is a famous event that helped make relay racing popular. It attracts many thousands of people every year. Some relay races are even so special they are put on coins. A Greek coin from 2003 shows modern athletes running. It also shows ancient athletes running a race called the dolichos. Whether it is a small school game or a giant Olympic event, relays celebrate working together.
