He was an American man who lived from 1838 to 1875. He was a trained ballet dancer first. This helped him move in new ways on the ice. He changed how people saw skating forever. His work made the sport much more beautiful.

Before Haines, skating was very stiff. People called this the British Style. It was formal and did not move much. Haines used his ballet skills to change this. He made his programs look graceful. He also added music to his skating shows. This was a brand new idea back then. He wanted skating to feel like a dance.

Haines also changed the way skates worked. Most skaters just strapped blades onto their boots. Haines screwed his blades directly onto his boots. This made his skates much more stable. It allowed him to do athletic leaps. It also helped him perform big jumps. This was a big step for the sport.

He traveled far from the United States. He went to Europe during the American Civil War. He gave shows in over twelve different countries. He even performed for royalty. He taught a new way called the International Style. He helped start a club in Vienna. It is called the Wiener Eislaufverein. This is one of the oldest clubs in the world.

Haines invented the sit spin. This is one of the three main spins today. The other two are the upright spin and the camel spin. The camel spin was made later by Cecilia Colledge. Haines died in Finland on June 23, 1875. His style became popular in the U.S. much later. The first U.S. championships for his style were in 1914. He is now in the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
