Haines was a ballet dancer. He used dance to make his skating graceful. Before him, skating was very stiff and formal. This was called the British Style. Haines changed this. He added music to his skating shows. This was a new idea at the time.

He also changed his equipment. Most skaters strapped blades onto their boots. Haines screwed his blades directly onto his boots. This made his skates more stable. It helped him do big jumps and leaps.

Haines traveled to many places in Europe. He skated in over a dozen countries. He even performed for kings and queens. He taught a new way of skating. People called this the International Style. He helped start a famous club in Vienna. This club is called the Wiener Eislaufverein.

Haines also invented the sit spin. This is one of the three basic spins used today. He died in Finland in 1875. Later, he joined the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
