Many tribes called it "The Creator's Game." They played it to give thanks to the Creator or Master. It was also a way to bring honor to their tribes. In the past, games could have hundreds of players on a field many miles long. These matches could last for two or three days from sunup to sundown.

Players use a special stick to move a ball. The stick has a head with a net on the end. Players use this tool to catch, carry, pass, and shoot the ball. The goal is to shoot the ball into the opponent's goal. In field lacrosse, ten players are on each team.

There are different roles like attackmen, midfielders, defensemen, and a goalie. Some players use short sticks, while others use long sticks. The goalie has a very wide stick to block shots. A face-off starts the play. During a face-off, two players put their sticks on the ground. They fight for the ball when the whistle blows.

History shows how the game changed over many years. In 1637, French missionaries saw the Huron tribes play in Ontario. They called the game "the stick" in French. Later, in 1860, a Canadian dentist named William George Beers helped change the rules. He created the Montreal Lacrosse Club. He made the games shorter and limited teams to 12 players. The first game under these new rules happened in 1867.

By the year 1900, many clubs were playing in places like England and Australia. The women's game was later introduced in Scotland in 1890.

There are several different ways to play lacrosse today.

Field lacrosse is played outdoors on a large grass field. Box lacrosse is played indoors in a small area. This version is often played on a floor used for hockey. Box lacrosse is very fast because the space is small. It also uses a shot clock to make players shoot quickly. Women's lacrosse is played outdoors without body contact.
