Players use a long-handled stick called a crosse to play. The head of the stick has a net made of mesh or leather. Players use this net to catch and pass a solid rubber ball. In the United States, the ball used is yellow. The main goal is to throw the ball into the opponent's goal. To keep the ball in the stick, players use a move called cradling. This involves moving the wrists and arms in a semi-circular motion. This motion uses centripetal force to hold the ball in the pocket.

Rules are very important to keep the game fair and safe. In the United States, players must wear mouth guards and goggles. The stick itself must follow specific rules to ensure a fair game. The pocket of the stick must be shallow enough to see the ball. If you hold the stick at eye level, the ball should be visible over the side. Referees perform stick checks to make sure the equipment is legal. They might tilt the stick at a 45-degree angle to see if the ball rolls out. If the ball gets stuck, the pocket is too deep for play.

This sport has a very long and interesting history. It was originally played by the indigenous peoples of the Americas. In the 1630s, French Jesuit missionaries introduced the game to Europeans. Early versions of the game could last for several days. Some games involved as many as 100 to 1,000 men from different tribes. The modern women's version began in 1890 at St Leonard's School in Scotland. A teacher named Louisa Lumsden introduced it after watching a men's game. Later, Rosabelle Sinclair helped start the first women's team in the United States in 1926.

Today, many different groups organize lacrosse around the world. In the United States, the NCAA runs championships for college players each spring. There are three different competitive divisions in the NCAA. Internationally, a group called World Lacrosse governs the sport. They sponsor the Women's Lacrosse World Cup every four years. In U.S. college play, a team has 12 players including the goalkeeper. International teams are smaller, with only 10 players on the field. Games in the U.S. are split into four 15-minute quarters.

Lacrosse connects modern athletes to ancient traditions through skill. While men's lacrosse often uses more brute strength, women's lacrosse relies on skill. The sport has changed many times to make it better for players. For example, players can now kick the ball to move it out of traffic. There is also a rule called shooting space to protect attackers. This rule stops defenders from running into the path of a player shooting. Since 2001, the Tewaaraton Award has honored the best college players. This award celebrates the hard work and talent found in the sport.
