The game involves two teams of eleven players competing on a field. Each team consists of ten field players and one goalkeeper. Players use specialized curved sticks to maneuver a small, hard ball. The objective is to move the ball into the rival team's shooting circle and into the goal. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins.

While the sport is known simply as "hockey" in many regions, it is called "field hockey" in the United States and Canada to distinguish it from ice hockey.

Success in field hockey depends on strict adherence to the rules of equipment and movement.

Every player's stick has two distinct sides: one rounded and one flat. Players are only permitted to progress the ball using the flat face of the stick. Using the rounded side to stop or hit the ball results in a penalty. However, accidental touches that do not materially affect play are not considered offenses. The goalkeeper uses a specially designed stick to maximize their surface area. Unlike field players, goalkeepers are allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body while inside the shooting circle.

Historically, wooden sticks were the standard equipment for players. As technological advancements progressed, synthetic materials became more affordable and common. Modern elite sticks are typically manufactured from a combination of carbon fibre, fibreglass, and aramid. High carbon content is often preferred by players at the professional level to increase strength and control. The playing surfaces have also changed. While matches were once played on grass, most modern games occur on watered turf or artificial turf. This transition to synthetic surfaces increased the speed of the game and led to new tactics like the "Indian dribble."

The roots of field hockey are buried deep in antiquity.

Historical records suggest that early versions of the game existed in Egypt, Persia, and Ethiopia. Ancient Greek depictions show a game that may have been called "keretizein," played with a ball and a horn. In East Asia, similar games were played with carved wooden sticks before 300 BC. The Daur people of Inner Mongolia have played a similar game called "beikou" for about 1,000 years. Other regional variants include "suigan" in Ming dynasty China and "hurling" in Ireland. Some historians believe these games originated from ancient military training or aristocratic rituals involving sceptres.

The modern version of the sport was formalized in 19th-century England.

The first known club was established in 1849 at Blackheath in London. Later, the Teddington Hockey Club helped shape the modern game by introducing the striking circle. They also changed the ball from a rubber cube to a sphere. The Hockey Association was founded in 1876, and the first international competition occurred in 1895. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) was later formed by seven European nations to govern the sport. The FIH manages the Hockey Rules Board and oversees major international competitions.

Field hockey has a storied history in international competition, particularly at the Olympic Games.

The sport appeared in the 1908 and 1920 Olympics but was briefly removed in 1924. After its reinstatement in 1928, India became a dominant force, winning gold medals from 1932 until 1956. Pakistan also achieved great success, winning Olympic gold in 1960, 1968, and 1984. Since the introduction of artificial turf in the 1970s, nations like Australia, the Netherlands, and Germany have become the leading powers. Women's field hockey has also seen massive growth. After the merger of the IFWHA and FIH in 1982, women's hockey was included in the Olympics starting in 1980.

Today, the sport offers various ways to play depending on the environment and setting.

Indoor hockey is a popular variant played on synthetic hard courts or hardwood floors. Beach field hockey is another version played on sand. In the United States, the sport is predominantly played by girls and women, largely due to the influence of Title IX. Much of the American participation occurs in high schools and colleges, especially on the East Coast. Whether played in a professional stadium or a local club, field hockey remains a dynamic and globally respected sport.
