Hurling is an ancient outdoor team game of Gaelic Irish origin. It is often called the fastest field sport in the world.

The game is a major part of Irish culture and identity. UNESCO recognizes hurling as an element of intangible cultural heritage. Women play a version of the game called camogie. This sport shares many features with Gaelic football. These include the field size, the goal types, and much of the terminology.

To play, hurlers use an ash wood stick called a hurley or a hurl.

They use this stick to strike a small ball known as a sliotar. The sliotar has a cork center and a leather cover. It is between 45 and 50 millimeters in diameter. The ball weighs between 95 and 110 grams. Players can catch the sliotar in their hands. They may carry it for no more than four steps. To move further, they must balance the ball on the stick, a move called a solo. They can also strike the ball in the air or on the ground.

Scoring depends on how the sliotar passes through the H-shaped goalposts.

The posts are 6.4 meters apart. The crossbar sits 2.44 meters above the ground. A net is attached below the crossbar to catch goals. If a player hits the ball over the crossbar, it is one point. An umpire raises a white flag to signal this. If the ball goes under the crossbar into the net, it is a goal. A goal is worth three points. An umpire raises a green flag for a goal.

Teams consist of fifteen players on the pitch at one time. These players include a goalkeeper, three full backs, and three full forwards. There are also three half backs, two midfielders, and three half forwards. A full team panel can include 24 to 30 players. Five substitutions are allowed during a match. Senior inter-county matches last 70 minutes, divided into two 35-minute halves. Other matches usually last 60 minutes.

If a game ends in a draw, teams may use extra time or a shoot-out.

Safety is a very important part of the modern game. Since January 1, 2010, all players must wear a standard hurling helmet.

This helmet has a rigid plastic shell and foam cushioning. It covers the forehead, temples, and the back of the neck. A wire grille faceguard protects the entire face. Officials must stop play if a player is not wearing this equipment. This rule helps reduce injuries during the fast-paced action.

Hurling has a very long history in Ireland. The earliest written references appear in Irish law tracts from the seventh century. Archaeological evidence of the game dates back to the twelfth century. The first set of written rules was published in January 1883 by the Dublin Hurling Club. Today, the Gaelic Athletic Association, or GAA, administers the sport. The game is a massive part of Irish life. A 2024 survey showed that 25% of Irish people chose hurling as their favorite sport.

This sport has a huge impact on global culture and media. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final is a famous event. CNN ranked it second in its list of top sporting events to see live. It placed ahead of the FIFA World Cup in that ranking. The game also appears frequently in film, music, and literature. Some people view it as a vital connection to Irish history. It remains a powerful symbol of skill, speed, and togetherness.
