Ice hockey is a fast-paced team sport played on ice skates.

Most games occur on an ice skating rink with specific lines and markings. The primary objective is to score goals. Teams use sticks to control and advance a vulcanized rubber puck. They shoot this hard disc into the opponent's net. Each goal counts as one point. The team with the highest score wins. A standard game lasts one hour. This time is divided into three 20-minute periods. If the score is tied, teams use overtime or a shootout to decide a winner.

During normal play, each team has six players on the ice. This includes one goaltender and five skaters.

Skaters are divided into specific roles. Forwards consist of a centre and two wingers, known as a left wing and a right wing. Forwards often play together in units called lines. Defencemen usually play in pairs. These players are often divided into left and right sides. The goaltender protects the net. They often stand in a semi-circle called the crease.

Players must follow specific rules to manage the puck. One major rule is the offside rule. A player is offside if they enter the opponent's zone before the puck. Another rule is icing. Icing occurs when a player shoots the puck across both the centre line and the opponent's goal line.

Play also stops if the puck goes out of play. This happens if the puck leaves the rink perimeter. Officials use a whistle to stop the action. Play restarts with a faceoff. During a faceoff, an official drops the puck between two players. They then compete to gain control.

Ice hockey is a full-contact sport. This means players may use their bodies to check opponents.

Body checking can be used to stop an opponent's progress. Players can also change during the game. This is called changing on the fly. In the NHL, rules prevent substitutions after a team ices the puck.

Teams must also manage their rosters carefully. The IIHF allows up to 20 players and two goaltenders. The NHL limits the total number of players per game to 18 plus two goaltenders.

Modern ice hockey developed in Canada. The first indoor game was played in Montreal on March 3, 1875.

The sport evolved from various stick and ball games. These included shinty from Scotland and field hockey from England. The North American game of lacrosse was also an influence. Amateur leagues began in the 1880s. Professional hockey emerged around 1900. In 1892, the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup was commissioned. This became the famous Stanley Cup.

It is now the championship trophy of the National Hockey League.

Overtime rules have changed many times to influence how teams play. In the NHL, sudden-death overtime is common. This means the first team to score wins immediately.

Since the 2015–16 season, NHL overtime uses only three skaters per side. If a game remains tied after overtime, a shootout may occur. In a shootout, players take individual penalty shots.

Canada officially recognized it as its national winter sport in 1994. Women's hockey has also seen great growth. Organizers began removing body checking from female play in the mid-1980s. This helped the sport gain wider popularity. The first IIHF Women's World Championship was held in 1990. Women's ice hockey joined the Olympics in 1998.
