It serves as the highest level of competition for ice hockey in North America. Currently, the league consists of 32 professional teams. Of these, 25 teams are located in the United States. The remaining 7 teams are located in Canada. The NHL is a massive economic force in the sports world. It ranks as the fifth-highest grossing professional sports league globally by revenue.

The league operates through a structured seasonal format. The regular season typically begins in October and runs through April. During this period, every team plays a schedule of 82 games. Once the regular season concludes, the top 16 teams advance to the postseason. These teams enter the Stanley Cup playoffs, which is a four-round tournament. This intense competition continues into June to determine the ultimate champion. The winner receives the Stanley Cup, a trophy of immense prestige.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it one of the most important championships in the sport. The Montreal Canadiens hold the record for the most titles, with 25 wins. This includes three championships won before the NHL became the exclusive holder of the Cup in 1926. Most recently, the Florida Panthers won the 2025 Stanley Cup Final by defeating the Edmonton Oilers.

This trophy represents the pinnacle of achievement for every player.

The NHL was organized on November 26, 1917, at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal. It was formed as a successor to the National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHA had been founded in 1909 in Renfrew, Ontario. A dispute with an owner named Eddie Livingstone led several teams to suspend the NHA. These owners then met to form the new league. Frank Calder was selected as the first president and served until 1943. At its inception, the league had only four teams, all located in Canada.

The league's history is marked by several distinct eras of growth. In 1924, the Boston Bruins joined, making the NHL an international league. From 1942 to 1967, the league was defined by the "Original Six" era. This period featured only six teams: the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. In 1967, the league underwent a major expansion to double its size to 12 teams. This expansion was driven by a desire for television contracts and competition from other leagues.

Expansion continued through the late 20th century. The league grew to 18 teams by 1974 and 21 teams by 1979. A rivalry with the World Hockey Association (WHA) led to further changes. The NHL eventually absorbed teams like the Edmonton Oilers, which featured the legendary Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky set numerous records, including 215 points in a single season. The league reached 30 teams by the year 2000. More recently, the Vegas Golden Knights joined in 2017, followed by the Seattle Kraken in 2021.

The league's structure has also seen recent shifts in team locations. In 2024, the Arizona Coyotes suspended operations. Their assets were acquired to establish the Utah Hockey Club, now known as the Utah Mammoth. This transition maintained the total count of 32 teams. The NHL has also faced labor challenges, including four league-wide work stoppages since 1992. Despite these challenges, the league remains a central part of North American culture. It connects players from many nations to a global audience of fans.
