The National Lacrosse League, known as the NLL, is a professional league for box lacrosse.

Box lacrosse is a fast-paced version of the sport played inside large indoor arenas. The NLL is a major professional organization in North America. It is highly popular among sports fans worldwide. In fact, the NLL ranks third in average attendance for professional indoor sports. Only the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) have higher attendance numbers. Most NLL games are played during the winter and spring months. This schedule distinguishes the NLL from other box lacrosse leagues that play in the summer. Teams compete throughout the season to win the National Lacrosse League Cup.

The mechanics of an NLL game follow a very specific structure. A game consists of four 15-minute quarters. There are 2-minute breaks between the quarters and a 15-minute half-time period. To begin each quarter or after a goal is scored, players perform a face-off. During a face-off, two players push the heads of their sticks together with the ball in the middle. This often results in a scrum-like match as players fight for possession. Each team dresses 19 players, consisting of 2 goaltenders and 17 runners. To keep the pace fast, the league uses a 30-second shot clock. This clock starts as soon as a team takes possession. If the offense does not shoot within 30 seconds, they lose the ball. However, the clock restarts if the offense shoots and then retrieves the ball.

The league's structure has changed over time to accommodate growth. Currently, the NLL is composed of 14 teams in the United States and 7 teams in Canada. The league is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Starting with the 2024 season, the NLL eliminated its East and West Conferences. Now, all teams play in a single division. This format ensures that every team plays every other team at least once. During the regular season, each team plays 18 games. They play nine games at home and nine games away. Most games take place on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams enter sudden death overtime.

The history of the league began with the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League (EPBLL). This league was incorporated on March 13, 1986, by Russ Cline and Chris Fritz. The name "Eagle" was inspired by a meeting with Iroquois leaders. In their culture, the eagle is viewed as a tutelary, or protective, spirit. The EPBLL began play in 1987 with four teams. The Baltimore Thunder became the league's first champion by defeating the Washington Wave 11–10. After the second season, the league changed its name to the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL). This change happened because the original name was considered too cryptic for many people. The league eventually transitioned into the NLL.

The playoffs determine which team is the best in the league. Since 2018, the league has used an expanded playoff format. Starting in the 2024 season, the top 8 teams in the standings qualify for the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs is a single-elimination format. However, the Conference Finals and the Championship rounds are best-of-three series. These high-stakes games determine who receives the NLL Cup. The league has maintained strong fan interest for many years. Since 2004, the NLL has averaged between 8,900 and 10,700 spectators per game.

The players in the NLL represent a unique group of athletes. Many players hold full-time jobs outside of the professional league. For instance, former Buffalo Bandits player John Tavares worked as a high school teacher in Ontario. The player demographics show a strong connection to specific cultures. Although seven teams are in the U.S., less than 7% of the players are American. Approximately 83% of the players are Canadian. Additionally, about 10% of the players are Haudenosaunee. This demographic makeup highlights the deep roots of lacrosse in these communities.

The NLL is more than just a sports league; it is a major cultural event. The league's growth from four teams in 1987 to 21 teams today shows its success. The transition from the MILL to the NLL marked a new era for professional indoor lacrosse. By combining high-speed gameplay with a dedicated fan base, the NLL has secured its place in North American sports. The league continues to evolve through changes in division structure and playoff formats. It remains a primary stage for the world's best box lacrosse players to showcase their skill.
