Most games happen during the winter and spring months. This is different from other box lacrosse leagues that play in summer. Teams compete all season to win the NLL Cup. This trophy is the big prize for the best team.

Playing a game involves many specific rules and steps. Each game has four quarters that last 15 minutes each. There are 2-minute breaks between these quarters. A 15-minute half-time break happens in the middle of the game. At the start, players perform a face-off at center field. Two players push their stick heads together to grab the ball. A 30-second shot clock keeps the action moving quickly. If a team does not shoot within 30 seconds, they lose the ball. Each team can also use a 45-second timeout during each half.

Teams in the NLL are spread across North America. There are 14 teams located in the United States. There are also 7 teams located in Canada. The league's main office is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since 2024, all teams play in one single division. This means every team plays every other team at least once. In the regular season, each team plays 18 games. They play nine games at home and nine games away. Most games are played on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays.

The history of the league began in 1986. It started as the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League. Two men named Russ Cline and Chris Fritz formed it. The name "Eagle" came from Iroquois leaders. They view the eagle as a tutelary or protective spirit. The league later changed its name to the MILL. Eventually, it became the NLL we know today. The Baltimore Thunder was the very first champion in 1987. Since 2004, crowds have averaged between 8,900 and 10,700 people per game.

The players in the NLL are very talented. Many of them have full-time jobs outside of sports. For example, John Tavares was a high school teacher. Most players come from Canada or the Haudenosaunee people. About 83% of players are Canadian. About 10% are Haudenosaunee. Less than 7% of the players are from the United States. This shows how much the sport is loved in certain places. It is a special way for these communities to share their skill.
