The NBA was created on August 3, 1949. It formed when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merged. The league actually uses the BAA's history as its own. The BAA was founded in 1946 by owners of large ice hockey arenas. The very first game happened on November 1, 1946, in Toronto.

Today, the NBA is part of a much larger basketball world.

The league is a member of USA Basketball. This group is recognized by the International Basketball Federation, known as FIBA. The NBA also helps run other leagues. These include the WNBA for women, which started in 1996. There is also the NBA G League and the Basketball Africa League. Even the NBA 2K League is part of their work.
