It consists of 30 professional teams located in North America. Twenty-nine of these teams are in the United States, while one team is in Canada. The league is a massive economic force in global sports. It is the second-wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue. Only the National Football League (NFL) generates more revenue. NBA players are also recognized as the world's highest-paid athletes by average annual salary per player.

A typical NBA season follows a strict schedule of competition.

The regular season begins in October and runs through April. During this period, each of the 30 teams plays exactly 82 games. After the regular season, the league moves into the playoff tournament. This postseason competition extends into June. The entire season culminates in the NBA Finals championship series. The Oklahoma City Thunder are the reigning champions after defeating the Indiana Pacers in the 2025 Finals.

The league's structure and rules have evolved to improve the game. In 1954, the NBA introduced the 24-second shot clock. This rule was designed to encourage more shooting and prevent teams from stalling. In 1979, the league added the three-point field goal to the game. This change altered how teams strategize and score. The league also maintains a diverse ecosystem of basketball. The NBA operates the WNBA, which is a women's league founded in 1996. It also manages the NBA G League, the NBA 2K League, and the Basketball Africa League.

The history of the NBA began with a major merger in 1949.

The league was created on August 3, 1949, when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged with the National Basketball League (NBL). The BAA was founded in 1946 by owners of major ice hockey arenas. The first game in league history took place on November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario. The Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens. Ossie Schectman of the Knickerbockers scored the very first basket. The NBA officially considers the BAA's history and statistics as its own.

As the league grew, it faced many changes in team locations and diversity. In the early years, the league contracted from 17 franchises to just eight teams by 1955. Many teams moved from smaller cities to larger metropolitan areas. For example, the Hawks moved from the Tri-Cities to Milwaukee, and later to St. Louis. The league also saw important progress in social inclusion.

Wataru Misaka broke the color barrier as the first non-white player in the BAA in 1947. Later, players like Chuck Cooper and Earl Lloyd helped integrate the league during the 1950s.

Legendary rivalries and superstars have defined different eras of the NBA.

In the 1960s, Bill Russell led the Boston Celtics to a record eight straight championships. His rivalry with Wilt Chamberlain became a landmark in American sports history. Chamberlain once set a single-game record by scoring 100 points. In the 1970s, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar became the league's best player.

Jordan's era helped turn the NBA into a global phenomenon.

The NBA is also deeply connected to international basketball systems. The league is a member of USA Basketball (USAB). This organization is recognized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as the governing body for basketball in the United States. The league's influence reached a peak during the 1992 Olympics with the "Dream Team." This was the first Olympic team to use current NBA stars. Today, the league continues to expand its reach through various global initiatives and professional leagues.
