He served as the commissioner for 30 years. This made him the longest-serving commissioner in major North American sports history. He started working with the NBA in 1966 as a lawyer. Later, he became the general counsel in 1978. He eventually became the commissioner on February 1, 1984. He took over the job from Larry O'Brien. Stern's leadership helped the NBA grow into a huge global sport. He wanted more people around the world to love basketball.

To grow the league, Stern used many smart ideas. He opened 12 offices in cities outside the United States. He made sure games could be seen in over 200 places. The NBA even broadcasted games in more than 40 different languages. He helped set up training camps for players. He also worked to bring more players from other countries into the NBA. In 1987, he even sent video tapes to China to show basketball there. He wanted the game to reach every corner of the earth. This helped make the NBA a truly international league.

Stern also helped create new ways to play and watch the game. He helped found the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). He also started the NBA G League to help new players develop. To help fans watch from home, he launched NBA.com and NBA TV. He even created a service called NBA League Pass. He also started a program called NBA Cares to help people in need. These projects made the league much bigger than it was before. He changed how fans connect with their favorite players.

During his time, the NBA changed many important rules. He helped create a salary cap to share money between owners and players. This system meant players received 53 percent of all revenues. He also started a drug testing policy to keep the league clean. Stern focused on star players like Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan to attract fans. He also helped the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, known as the "Dream Team," participate in tournaments. This allowed many international stars to join the NBA later.
