A commissioner is the top executive who runs a sports league. Before leading the NHL, Bettman worked for the National Basketball Association (NBA). He spent many years there as a senior vice president and general counsel. He even helped develop a salary cap system for the NBA in 1983. This system is one that the league still uses today.

Bettman’s main job was to help the NHL grow across North America. He wanted to bring hockey to new places in the United States. He focused on the Sun Belt, which is the warm southern part of the country. During his time, he added several new teams like the Nashville Predators and the Atlanta Thrashers. He also helped the league grow to 32 teams by the 2021–22 season. In 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights joined as the 31st team. Later, he chose Seattle to be the 32nd team in 2018.

Growing a league can lead to many difficult choices and arguments. Bettman often moved teams to different cities to find new fans. For example, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993. Some fans in Canada and the Northern United States were not happy about this. They felt the league was moving away from traditional hockey areas. This led to some people calling him "anti-Canadian." However, Bettman did support a plan to help Canadian teams stay strong. This plan used money from American teams to help four Canadian clubs.

Bettman also had to manage hard disagreements between owners and players. These disagreements are called labor stoppages. He led the league through three different lockouts. A lockout happens when players cannot work because of a disagreement. The most famous one happened in 2004–05. That lockout was so serious that the entire NHL season was canceled. This was the first time a major North American sports league ever did that.

Even with these hard jobs, Bettman has received many honors. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018. He was also put into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2014, he was named "sports executive of the year" by two different journals. He studied at Cornell University and the New York University School of Law. Today, he lives in New Jersey with his wife, Shelli, and their three children.
