A commissioner is the top person who runs a sports league. Before this, he worked for the NBA, which is a basketball league.

Bettman helped the NHL grow much larger. He added many new teams in the United States. This included teams in the Sun Belt, which is the warm southern part of the country. Since 2021, the league has grown to 32 teams. He chose Seattle as the newest team in 2018.

His work has not always been easy. He has faced many arguments with players. These arguments led to three lockouts. A lockout is when players cannot work because of a disagreement. One lockout in 2004 even canceled a whole season. Some fans in Canada were unhappy about moving teams away from their area.

Despite these hard times, he has won many awards. He was named sports executive of the year in 2014. He is also in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

He also belongs to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
