Larry O'Brien was a man who held many important roles. He was a leader in politics and a leader in sports. He was born on July 7, 1917, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father was a leader in the Democratic Party. This helped O'Brien learn about politics at a very young age. At only 11 years old, he volunteered for a presidential campaign.

O'Brien was a master at helping people win elections. He worked closely with President John F. Kennedy. He used many volunteers to reach voters in every corner of the states. This was a new way of doing things. He also worked for President Lyndon Johnson after Kennedy died. O'Brien served as the Postmaster General for the United States. In this job, he moved mail from trains to planes and trucks.

In 1975, O'Brien became the commissioner of the NBA. A commissioner is the person in charge of a whole sports league. He helped the NBA grow from 18 teams to 23 teams. He helped teams like the Denver Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs join the league. He also made a big deal with CBS to show games on TV. This helped many more people watch basketball.

Many big changes happened in the NBA during his time. In 1979, the league started using the three-point field goal. He also helped create a rule called a salary cap in 1983. This helped manage how much players were paid. Under his leadership, the number of people attending games reached 10 million. He even helped bring basketball to cable TV channels like ESPN.

Because he did so much for basketball, the league honored him. They renamed the championship trophy after him. It is now called the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy. He was also put into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991. O'Brien died of cancer on September 28, 1990. He was 73 years old when he passed away.
