Edmond O'Brien was a famous American actor who worked for almost 40 years. He performed on stage, in movies, and on television. He was known as both a leading man and a character actor. A character actor is someone who plays many different types of people. He was so popular that he won an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. He even earned two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

O'Brien worked very hard to prepare for his roles. As a child in Brooklyn, he performed magic shows for his neighbors. He called himself "Neirbo the Great" by spelling his name backward. Later, he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. His teachers taught him to prepare his tools. These tools included his body, his voice, and his speech. He also studied Shakespeare with the Columbia Laboratory Players.

His career began on the stage in places like Yonkers and Broadway. He made his Broadway debut at age 21 in a play called *Daughters of Atreus*. He played a grave digger in the play *Hamlet*. Soon, his stage work caught the eye of movie studios. He was offered a role in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* in 1939. He also played Mercutio in a famous production of *Romeo and Juliet*. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces.

O'Brien became very well known for acting in crime films, which are often called film noir. He starred in many famous movies like *The Killers* and *D.O.A.* In 1949, he played an undercover officer in *White Heat*. He also worked in radio for 31 months. He played the title role in the drama *Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar*. In 1954, he won his Academy Award for the movie *The Barefoot Contessa*. He was even voted as having the most "male magnetism" by a large women's group in 1949.

Acting was a job that changed many times for him. He sometimes struggled with his weight during the 1950s. He once went on a strict vegetarian diet to get a part. He also tried his hand at being a director. He directed the film *Man-Trap* in 1961. Even when things were hard, he kept working in many different ways. He appeared in everything from Westerns to big historical movies like *Lawrence of Arabia*.
