Edmond O'Brien was a versatile American actor who worked for nearly 40 years. He performed on stage, in film, and on television. O'Brien was successful as both a leading man and a character actor. A character actor is a performer who specializes in playing many different types of people. His impressive career earned him one Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. He also received two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

O'Brien began his journey with a passion for performance in Brooklyn, New York. As a young boy, he performed magic shows for his neighbors. He called himself "Neirbo the Great" by spelling his name backward. An aunt who taught English and speech introduced him to the theater. This sparked a deep interest in acting that led him to professional training. He attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre on a scholarship. There, he studied under Sanford Meisner for two years. His teachers taught him to prepare his essential tools. These tools were his body, his voice, and his speech.

His professional career started on the stage in summer stock and Broadway. He made his Broadway debut at age 21 in *Daughters of Atreus*. Later, he played a grave digger in the play *Hamlet*. His stage talent eventually caught the attention of RKO studios. This led to his first major film role in *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* in 1939. He later returned to Broadway to play Mercutio in *Romeo and Juliet*. During World War II, O'Brien served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He also performed in the Broadway play *Winged Victory* during this time.

O'Brien became a prominent figure in the film noir genre. Film noir is a style of crime drama often featuring dark moods. He starred in notable noir films like *The Killers* and *D.O.A.* In 1949, he played an undercover officer in the movie *White Heat*. He also spent 31 months starring in the radio drama *Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar*. In this role, he played an insurance investigator for 103 episodes. His talent for these intense roles helped establish his reputation in Hollywood.

In 1949, O'Brien received a surprising honor from a national organization. The Young Women's League of America held a vote regarding his appeal. They voted that he had more "male magnetism" than any other man in America. The league president stated his personality stirred women's imaginative impulses. This was a significant moment of recognition during his peak years. It highlighted the charisma that made him a successful leading man.

Acting was a career filled with both triumphs and challenges. During the 1950s, O'Brien struggled with his weight. This made it difficult to find first-rate leading roles for a few years. To secure a role in the series *Johnny Midnight*, he took drastic measures. He followed a strict vegetarian diet and quit drinking to lose 50 pounds. He also expanded his skills by becoming a film director. He directed his first feature film, titled *Man-Trap*, in 1961. He also operated his own production company, O'Brien-Frazen.

O'Brien reached the height of his critical success in 1954. He played the press agent Oscar Muldoon in *The Barefoot Contessa*. This performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to work in diverse genres, including Westerns and musicals. He appeared in the dystopian film *1984* and the comedy *The Girl Can't Help It*. Even when facing health issues, such as a heart attack during *Lawrence of Arabia*, he remained a dedicated professional. His ability to adapt to different roles and mediums defined his lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.
