He was frequently known for portraying characters that embodied an "everyman" image. This meant he played roles that felt relatable to regular people. His influence on the film industry was significant. In 1999, the American Film Institute named him the sixth-greatest male screen legend of the Classic Hollywood Era.

The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1906. Fonda was raised in a close and supportive Christian Scientist household. Because of his religion, the family avoided doctors for health matters. As a young boy, Fonda was shy and bashful. He was also a talented skater, swimmer, and runner. He once considered a career in journalism and worked at a phone company. A significant event occurred when he was 14 years old. He and his father witnessed a lynching during the Omaha race riot of 1919. This experience left him with a lifelong awareness of prejudice.

His professional acting journey began at age 20 in Omaha.

He started at the Omaha Community Playhouse after a recommendation from a family friend. Fonda found that acting allowed him to use scripted words to hide his own shy personality. He moved east in 1928 to seek professional opportunities. He worked with the University Players, an intercollegiate summer stock company. During this time, he met his future wife, Margaret Sullavan. He also formed a lifelong friendship with fellow actor James Stewart. The two men later became roommates in New York City to hone their skills on Broadway.

Fonda transitioned to Hollywood stardom in 1935. He was hired as the leading man for the film adaptation of "The Farmer Takes a Wife." Soon, he was earning $3,000 per week. He appeared in several major films during the late 1930s. These included "Jezebel" in 1938 and "Jesse James" in 1939. He also worked with director John Ford on "Young Mr. Lincoln" in 1939. One of his most famous roles was Tom Joad in "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940). This performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Fonda paused his film career to serve in the United States Navy during World War II.

He stated he did not want to fight a "fake war" in a movie studio. He served as a quartermaster third class on a destroyer. He was later commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade in Air Combat Intelligence. He served in the Central Pacific and received the Bronze Star Medal. He also earned the Navy Presidential Unit Citation. After his active duty, he served in the Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1948.

After the war, Fonda returned to the stage and the screen. He starred in the Broadway play "Mister Roberts," which won him a 1948 Tony Award. He later brought this role to the screen in 1955. He also participated in several highly regarded Westerns. These included "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943) and "My Darling Clementine" (1946). In the 1950s, he played the role of Manny Balestrero in the thriller "The Wrong Man." Later in his life, he showed his range by playing a villain in "Once Upon a Time in the West" (1968). He also played military leaders like Admiral Nimitz in "Midway" (1976).

Fonda's final major achievement was winning the Academy Award for Best Actor.
