He was celebrated for his immense range and technical skill. He could portray everything from powerful kings to misunderstood misfits and monsters. His career spanned the live stage in London and Broadway to the massive film industry in Hollywood. Laughton's ability to transform his personality made him a vital figure in 20th-century performance art. He eventually earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

Acting is the craft of portraying characters through voice, movement, and emotion. Laughton studied this discipline at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. One of his teachers there was the notable actor Claude Rains. Laughton began his professional journey on the stage in 1926. He performed in classical plays, including works by William Shakespeare at the Old Vic. He even traveled to Paris to perform at the Comédie-Française. There, he became the first English actor to appear at that prestigious theatre. He performed the role of Sganarelle in French and received an ovation from the audience.

Laughton's early life was shaped by his roots in Yorkshire, England. He was born on July 1, 1899, in Scarborough. His parents, Robert and Eliza Laughton, were hotel keepers. Laughton attended Stonyhurst College, which is a prominent English Jesuit school. Before pursuing drama, he served in World War I. He served with the 2/1st Battalion of the Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion and the 7th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment. During his service, he was gassed.

His transition to cinema brought him massive international success. In 1933, he starred in the historical drama The Private Life of Henry VIII. This role earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. This success led him to Hollywood, where he appeared in many iconic films. He played Captain William Bligh in the action adventure Mutiny on the Bounty in 1935.

He also portrayed Quasimodo in the 1939 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His filmography includes diverse roles such as Inspector Javert in Les Misérables and the character Rembrandt.

Laughton was more than just a performer; he was also a creator behind the scenes. He co-founded Mayflower Pictures in the United Kingdom with producer Erich Pommer. This company produced films like Jamaica Inn and St. Martin's Lane. Although the company faced financial difficulties and ended due to World War II, it showed his ambition. Laughton also worked as a director. He directed the acclaimed thriller The Night of the Hunter in 1955. In his later years, he applied his directing skills to the stage. He directed productions such as The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial and Don Juan in Hell.

Throughout his career, Laughton received numerous prestigious honors. In addition to his Academy Award, he won a Grammy Award. He also received nominations for two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe. His work was often discussed by critics of his time. While some reviewers like C. A. Lejeune were critical of certain roles, others like David Shipman praised his wide range. He was considered a "total actor" by many in the industry. His ability to handle complex, often arrogant or unscrupulous characters, defined much of his legacy.

Laughton's career connects the traditions of classical theatre with the modern era of filmmaking. He bridged the gap between the West End stage and the Hollywood studio system. His work helped establish the importance of character-driven historical dramas. Even after his death on December 15, 1962, his influence remained.
