Athletes ride a small sled on their backs. They go down a track feet first. This is the fastest of the sliding sports. Some riders can go over 140 km/h.

To steer, riders use their body in many ways. They use their calf muscles to bend the runners. They also use their shoulders to move the pod. They must stay very relaxed and focused. A good rider follows a perfect line. Any small mistake can cost time.

There are two main types of tracks. Artificial tracks are smooth and have high walls. These tracks use cooling systems to keep the ice hard. Natural tracks use old mountain roads. These tracks are iced by hand. On natural tracks, riders use a steering rope. They also use spikes on their shoes to brake.

Luge started in Switzerland in the 1800s. A man named Caspar Badrutt helped it grow. People used to use sleds for simple travel. Later, guests at his hotel used them for fun. Now, people race in many events. There are races for men, women, and teams.
