Runners go around an outdoor track twice. In winter, they run four laps on an indoor track. This race has been in the Olympics since 1896.

To win, athletes need many skills. They must have speed to sprint. They also need endurance to run a long way. This is a hard mix of skills to learn.

Racing is also about smart moves. Most runners move into one lane after the first turn. This means they must watch their position. Being near the front helps avoid trips in the crowd. Some runners like to go fast early. Others wait and run faster at the end. This is called a negative split.

David Rudisha holds the men's world record. He ran it in 2012. His time was 1:40.91. Jarmila Kratochvílová holds the women's world record. She set her time of 1:53.28 in 1983. These runners are among the best in history.
