It is about three and three-quarter laps on a track. Some people call it the "metric mile." This name comes from the mile run. In the United States, many people run a 1600 metre race instead.

This race is very hard. Runners need great endurance to keep going. They also need speed for a final sprint. Many races are slow and strategic at first. Runners jockey for a good spot in the pack. In the last lap, the pace gets very fast. Sometimes, "rabbits" help. These are runners who lead the early laps at a fast pace. They do not try to win. They help the other runners stay on track.

Men have run this in the Olympics since 1896. The first winner was Edwin Flack from Australia. Women joined the Olympics in 1972. Lyudmila Bragina from the Soviet Union was the first female champion. Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco holds the men's world record. His time was 3:26.00. Faith Kipyegon from Kenya holds the women's world record. Her time is 3:48.68.
