sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Jarmila Kratochvílová is a famous runner from Czechoslovakia. She was one of the fastest athletes in the world. People remember her for her incredible speed on the track. She competed in many different races. These included the 400 metre and 800 metre events. She even ran shorter sprints like the 100 metres.

Her speed earned her many medals and titles. She was named Sportsperson of the Year in her country twice.

Running these races takes a lot of skill. In a relay race, a team of runners works together. Jarmila often ran the anchor leg. This is the final part of the race for the team. She also ran in indoor stadiums. Indoor racing happens on a smaller track. In 1982, she set a world indoor record for the 400 metres. This record stayed unbroken for many years until 2023.

She trained very hard to reach these goals. Her coach for twenty years was named Miroslav Kváč.

Jarmila's journey to the top took time. She was a late developer in her career. She did not run her fastest 400 metre times until she was 27. She was 32 years old when she set her world records. Her first major event was in 1979 in Vienna. There, she won a silver medal in an indoor race.

She also competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. In those games, she won a silver medal in the 400 metres.

Many of her achievements are still talked about today. In 1983, she became a double world champion. She won gold in both the 400 metre and 800 metre races in Helsinki. Her 800 metre record is very special. It is the longest-standing unshared track record in athletics. Only two runners have come within one second of her time. Pamela Jelimo ran close in 2008. Caster Semenya also came close in 2018.

Her 400 metre record also stood for two years.

Jarmila's life shows how much work goes into sports. Some people wondered how she was so fast. She said her speed came from rigorous training. She also took high doses of vitamin B12. After she finished racing in 1987, she became a coach. She helped her student, Ludmila Formanová, become a world champion.

Jarmila has received many honors for her life. The Czech president gave her the Medal of Merit in 2013. She remains a big name in the world of track and field.
