Long ago, people used their bodies to measure. One cun was the width of a thumb knuckle. Two fingers side-by-side make 1.5 cun. Four fingers together make 3 cuns.

This unit is still used today. Doctors use it in traditional Chinese medicine. They use it to find acupuncture points on the body.

The cun is part of a larger system. One cun is made of 10 fen. These fen are very small. They were once the size of millet grains.

The exact size of a cun can change. In Hong Kong, it is about 3.715 cm. In China and Taiwan, it is about 3.3 cm. In Japan, a similar unit is about 3 cm.

People have worked to make these lengths standard. This helps everyone use the same math. It keeps the old ways and new ways together.
