This system uses pounds and ounces to measure things. It began a long time ago. Wool traders used it in the 13th century.

They needed a way to weigh heavy goods.

One pound is made of 16 ounces. This system became popular because it is easy to divide. You can split a pound into halves and quarters. This helped trade grow in Europe. Kings and queens helped too. Henry VII and Elizabeth I made sure everyone used the same rules. This helped create the Imperial system.

Today, many people still use these weights. The United States uses them every day. Canada and the United Kingdom use them too.

In 1959, countries agreed on a new rule. They fixed the weight of the pound to match kilograms. This made the system the same across many lands. Some people use a different system called Troy weight. That system is for precious items like gold.
