It is also called the International System of Units, or SI. This system is easy to use because it uses the number ten. This is called a decimal system.

You can change the size of a unit using a prefix. A prefix is a word added to the front of a name. For example, the prefix kilo means one thousand. So, a kilometre is one thousand metres. The prefix milli means one thousandth. A milligram is a very small part of a gram.

The SI system has seven base units. These are the starting parts for all other measurements. They include the metre for length and the second for time. The kilogram measures mass, which is how much matter is in an object. Other base units measure things like light and electricity.

In the past, people used physical objects to set these rules. Now, scientists use physical constants. A constant is a number that never changes in nature. This makes the measurements very steady and true for everyone.
