A gradian is part of a system based on the number ten. It uses groups of one hundred. A right angle is exactly 100 gradians. This makes math easy in some ways. For example, a full turn is 400 gradians. This helps people find directions quickly. If you know one angle, you can find the others easily.

This unit started in France. It was part of a plan to make measurements more simple. Today, people use it for special jobs. Surveyors use it to map the land. Miners and geologists use it too.

Gradians are used in the European Union. However, they are not part of the main world system. Most scientists use degrees or radians instead. Some math tools show gradians. But some new calculators do not have them. It is a special way to measure a turn.
